Summer Dining Room Decor {My New Chandelier and Tour 2020}

Happy almost summer! It's weird to say that, considering it feels like it should be August already :) We have been blessed with amazing weather during these quarantine months, and with home schooling, it totally made it feel like summer in April. I'm looking forward to this "long" summer since the weather all last summer was dismal and awful...like wearing a winter coat on the 4th of July, awful.

I'll be sharing some rooms in my house that have been updated with summer decor in the coming weeks. Up first is my dining room! But for now, let's get on with some updates I've been making in my dining room. 

 If you are a regular reader of my blog or follower on social media, you may notice something different in here. I finally changed out the chandelier!

The one we had in here before has been in since the house was built. I tried to "farmhouse" it up a little bit by taking off the shades and adding some beads. It worked for a short time. Then I bought a beautiful completely beaded one from World Market, but my husband said it looked like a taxi cab's seat covers, and swore not to hang it haha. I finally talked him into hanging it as my Mother's Day present. The day came, and he apparently didn't pay attention to where I wanted it hung and put it up in my front living room. I didn't hate it in there, but didn't want it in there. Then after turning it on and seeing how the light got dispersed by the beads, I knew I would hate it in my dining room. So, it was a happy accident, and I got to find a new one for this room :)  I was randomly searching Home Depot one day, and came across this beautiful thing on sale. It seriously only cost me about $70 shipped! 

 I love the style and how it instantly made my dining room feel a little bit more elegant...farmhouse elegant. 

Now for the rest of the changes in here for summer...

 My tablescape includes lots of my fave things to decorate which include candlesticks, terracotta pots, faux greenery and beaded garland. I corralled them all up in this vintage crate. 

 As for the place settings. I found these distressed chargers at Hobby Lobby at their end of Christmas sale. They were on sale for like $2 each. It's amazing how many non-seasonal transitional pieces I find during Christmas clearances. 

 I continued the beaded garland theme and added these little ones into the bowls. I made them last year and forgot all about them! Since the settings were all white, I decided to add a little bit of color with the faux magnolia leaves. 

My buffet is usually my favorite thing to decorate. I feel like it's the one place I can keep pretty full and totally get a way with it. 

 These cute drawers are from DecorSteals. I filled them up with terracotta pots, a candlestick, and extra napkins. 

 One of the mainstays on here is my 3-tier tray. I decorated it pretty simple with my coffee mugs, and then added a beaded garland on the top. 

 A few of my cutting boards are also displayed on the buffet along with my extra plates and bowls.

 I took down my lavender gallery wall and put up these window frames. The bottom two are actually picture frames that I took out all the glass and backing. The top one is from Kirklands. I added a little pop of color with the swagged lambs ear garland.

 I love mixing my chairs. I have the three metal ones in front to open up the space, and then have the fuller, bigger ones in the back and sides to give a little more traditional feel.

 For some reason, pillows and a throw blanket belong on the head chairs for me. It adds a little more comfort and a relaxed look.

 It's been awhile since I shared this room! Besides the chandelier, I have also updated the curtain rods to the same ones I did in my front living room with the wood corbels (tutorial here). And I changed out the decor above my french doors. The original one that has been there for over 10 years just competed with the chandelier too much. So, I took it down and put this one up from Hobby Lobby. 

I always love a good before and after of rooms, especially when something a little more substantial has been updated. Check this picture out from when we first moved it about 11 years ago:

A lot has changed besides the table! That table is a rockstar..ha! It's been through sooo much. It's definitely not as nice and pretty as the before picture. It now has lots of wear and tear...paint...glue...marker...etc etc.

Summer Entry Way Decor 2019

Our entry way is obviously the first thing people see when they come into our house. It's also one of the areas that gets updated most often. I don't mean to, but I noticed I tend to change out the pillows and even the wall decor every other month or so. I have plans to get rid of this bench, and make a new console table for the space. The bench has been a wonderful piece of storage that hides all my kids shoes. But, it's come to point that those shoes need to be sorted and stored a little differently. It's like 5 minutes of pure craziness when it comes time to find shoes...you can always find one, but hardly the other in this depth of shoe chaos. 

Until I get the time to make that console table, I'll just keep sharing my entry as is :) I, of course, changed it up for summer. Actually, changed it up so much that the only things that stayed were the actual bench and the fiddle leaf fig. 

 I tried to keep it simple by only using two pillows this season. I tend to go overboard on this little bench. Nobody actually uses it to sit on (even though that was my full intention). So, why not go overboard, right?

I think I might have a small obsession with faux cathedral windows. I made the brown one last year and have fallen in love with the look ever since. So, of course, when I went in to Hobby Lobby the other day and found these other two for $12 each, I grabbed them. I wasn't sure where to put them at first, but then decided to play musical chairs with them on this wall. I ended up loving this layered look.

Another big switch, at least for me, was moving my blanket basket out of here. There has been some sort of basket on the left side of this bench since day one. I wanted to add more height to this side to balance out the window frames. 

 Adding this wood ladder from DecorSteals did the trick! I didn't realize how much it would open up this narrow hall by moving the basket out. I bought this ladder last year and have struggle with where to place it. I think it found a new home :) Here's a little decorating secret. I love blankets...obviously. Some are pricey, and when you want some just for looks it's okay to go cheap :) I have found some of my favorite 'blankets' on Amazon. They aren't blankets though, they are turkish towels. They are about the same size of a throw blanket, weigh a little less, and are cheaper! Plus, they have so many amazing looks. You can find a slew of them here.

Another small, but big update was changing out the rug. The rug I had in here was perfect and fit every season and every change in decor. But, I wanted to see a little change so I swapped it out for this little jute rug. Jute is my favorite type of rug, this is like my 10th one over the years. They hold up great and hide dirt! They are the best :)

I had a love/hate relationship with my entryway for years. I hated the knotty alder railing. I hated the tile diamond flooring. I hated the the big beige walls. I always loved the two story space though and knew it could be something so much better. Just a few years of updates, changed a lot of things! New flooring, molding and paint was all that was needed! Trying to still talk my husband into letting me rip up this carpet and paint the stairs all white. I think that would help this space be that much more amazing.

DIY Summer Boredom Buster Jar (Over 60 Ideas Included!)

As I am writing this, it is so weird to think that summer break is just in a few more weeks! Seriously though, it's snowing outside my window right now. So, yeah. Who would guess warm temps are *hopefully* just a few weeks away? I'm being super hopeful they are :) 

As my kids are getting older, boredom is sitting in quicker than ever. I'm not one that allows for much screen time, so it's great having a few ideas in my back pocket when true boredom hits. I know that when school is out and the reality of the long hot days are here, it's a good thing to have lots of ideas to keep them busy! Today, I'm sharing with you my go to way to bust the boredom this summer in what more than a "Summer Boredom Buster" jar! 

When boredom strikes one of your kids, they simply pick an activity out of the jar. So, what do you need to create one yourself? Just a jar, some blocks, discs, or popsicle sticks, some paint, and lots of ideas! Don't worry on the ideas part, I got you covered at the bottom of the post :) I found this jar at a local craft store along with these 1" wood blocks.

 I then used DecoArt's Galaxy Glitter and Americana Acrylic Paint to bring life to the blocks. The colors I used :

Galaxy Glitter Pink Cosmos with a base of Bubblegum Pink
Galaxy Glitter Aurora Borealis Green with a base of Kelly Green
Galaxy Glitter Supernova Berry with a base of Magenta

 I painted one coat of acrylic paint on each block's connecting 4 sides, leaving a top and bottom bare. 

 Next, after the acrylic paint was dried, each block received two coats of the paired Galaxy Glitter. The Galaxy Glitter does take some time to dry, especially with thick coats. I found that two medium thick coats created enough glitter to do the trick! So, put on one coat. Let it harden. Then put on the next!

I let these all dry overnight to harden. 

I then wrote something fun to do on each one. On the opposite side of some I wrote a chore, or another fun item. I figured when they pick one out of the jar, they can then "roll the dice" kind of thing. Or, they need to do the chore before they do the fun thing! If they get a block with two fun things, then yay for them! :) 

 I then placed these all in the jar ready for some summer fun! 

My kids are already wanting to play with the blocks, just by themselves :) They can't wait to build something with them...which can totally be an idea for the jar! 

Since I'm a stay at home full time working mom, most of these ideas are things that the kids can do at home and free! I figure every once in awhile it wouldn't hurt to throw in some fun things like going out of ice cream or lunch. Of course, these are just ideas that I used for my kids, if yours are older, think of some age appropriate things for them to do too!
