5 Ways To Do Shiplap. Full Tutorials

Back in the day before shiplap was ever a mainstream thing, I added "planks" to some walls in my home trying hard to bring more character. We called this planking the wall. Most people think shiplap is just a trend and will die. I'm here to tell you, I don't believe this at all. Planking and shiplap have actually been around for decades. It's just now that the decor community and homeowners are starting to take notice because how mainstream it has become due in part to shows on HGTV :) ... you know the one!

I think this look is timeless, along with other things like board and batten. I don't have a room in my house that doesn't have either one of these. Because of this, I have tried many different ways to do shiplap or to get the shiplap look. I love all of these tutorials, some are easier than others, some cost way less. It's really up to you to decide which is the best method of shiplap for you and your space.

Just to take a stroll down memory lane, I'm going to start on the tutorials from oldest to newest just for the heck of it.

Number 1 Shiplap Method: Cedar Planks
Back in the day, I had a desire to transform my tuscan, color rich home into nothing but white while still adding character. I wanted to paint my table white, but my husband put his foot down. So, instead, I created essentially a table top made out of white cedar planks to go on top of it. It worked for a hot minute, but then I didn't like it. I ended up just placing the 8x4 piece against the wall in my dining room trying to figure out what to do next and had an epiphany. I needed to add that whole thing onto my wall. With some trial and error, I figured it out. This is hands down, my most favorite wall in my house. I did this about 8 years ago and haven't had a single problem with it since!

Number 2 Shiplap Method: Masonite
My front living was just a big beige box. No character at all. I loved how the planks/shiplap turned out in my dining room, but I wanted to try a different, cheaper method. I went to the store and found the cheapest 8x4 board, which was masonite. I had them cut them in 6 inch strips. I took them home and hung them all by myself in a couple of hours. It was easy and cheap!

Number 3 Shiplap Method: Pine boards
When I turned my office into a guest rooms years back, I wanted to add some character to the wall behind the bed. I decided to do another shiplap/planking method. For these ones, instead of painting it white, I stained them. It is now my little one's bedroom, and I love the contrast of the wood against the white.

Number 4 Shiplap Method: Tongue and Groove
I have a super little laundry room, but I wanted to make it cute and functional. After adding built in shelves, I needed something on the wall underneath them. I thought about doing tile, but then decided on shiplap again. This is around the time it became a mainstream thing and tongue and groove shiplap was starting to be sold in home improvement stores. These boards make the shiplap look super clean. It's definitely a more modern way to do it compared to method 1 :)

Number 5 Shiplap Method: Fake it
I'm not going to share with you how I did this, you'll have to check out the tutorial. But this was the cheapest method ever. And it turned out great! I did this shiplap method on two walls in my house. It's so easy you won't even have to visit the home improvement store :)

I know there will be some more shiplap/planks in my future, just haven't decided where yet :) Well, actually I know exactly where....it's about 20 feet high on a 2 foot ledge. So, I'm trying to get the courage to get up there and do it :) What's your favorite way? Do you have a different way you swear by?

Summer Living Room Decor (Front Living Room Tour 2019)

It's been one of those years that it's super hard to get into summer. I really want it so bad, but the weather is totally not cooperating. Because of that, I'm totally feeling like it's still April. I'm going to feel gypped out of a summer come fall. All my outdoor projects have been on hold because of the crazy rain and winds these past few months. One would think that would make me play around with the stuff inside my house more, but nope! Ha! Totally not. Instead I'm just in rebellion, I guess. I don't know how I am, but I feel like I am :)

I shared with you my summer dining room and entry way over the past two weeks, and today I'll be sharing with you my front living room. I loved the colors and how I decorated my main living room during the spring, so I brought a lot of that over into this room for summer to give it a little refresh. I didn't do big changes, but this just shows that a few small changes can help refresh a space easily.
Yes, there are a lot of pillows on this couch! But, it rarely get's used so it totally works. This actually folds out into a bed. It's the perfect piece of furniture for a multi-use room.

I brought in the pops of pink with the pillows and this throw blanket. Yes, blankets are essential in my house during the summer. They are used over and over again. I like it hot, my husband likes it cold. So, yeah, I get the short end of the stick on that one apparently :) Along with the pinks, I brought in lots of faux greenery.
I'm all about multi-functional furniture in this room. This bench works perfect to conceal toys, yet is a completely functional coffee table.

Years and years ago, I was so hyper focused on not adding pictures into my decor because it didn't match or it would throw things off. I got over that quickly when I had kids. I had so many photos that I didn't want to just be forgotten on a phone or sd card. So, I decided to create a gallery wall for each kid. I told myself I would go through them and update them as time goes by, but I haven't done that much....and I don't really mind. I love looking at their sweet baby faces :)
I changed up this mantel quite a bit from spring, made it a little cleaner. Truthfully, it felt so weird looking in this room without all the stuff on the mantel and wall :) You can see the spring mantel here if you don't know what I'm talking about.
That's it for my front room! I am so excited to share with you my next project on my patio. It has made such a difference in the space! So be sure to check back or follow me on social media for links and updates! :)

Farmhouse Summer Dining Room Decor (Tour 2019)

This post contains affiliate links.

It's finally feeling like summer around here! We have had 3 full days of sun with no rain or snow. I count that as a win! If you follow me on social media, you'll know that we have had a super rough spring...technically it's still spring, but usually we are watering our grass beginning to mid May. It's mid-June and still haven't turned on our sprinklers. This weather is perfect since today I'll be sharing my dining room with you all for Marty's from A Stroll Thru Life's summer tour! This is where 30 bloggers share some amazing summer decor inspiration with you all week! You can see the full list at the bottom of the post. If you are joining along the blog hop, and have just come from Follow The Yellow Brick Home, welcome!

This year all around my home I have included lots and lots of terracotta. I found an easy technique to faux age the pots and kind of got carried away :) So, I have them all over....and the dining room was no exception.

The only thing that changes seasonal in my dining room is what goes on my table, like place settings and the tablescape. I tend to change up the pillows on the head of the table along with the draped blanket. Why do I need pillows and a blanket in here? I don't :) I just love the look and it makes it so inviting.
For the tablescape, I used a variety of terracotta pots. You can see how I aged them here (tutorial). I placed them in this vintage wood crate, added some height with other pots and a planter stool.

For the places settings, I kept it really simple. I found these amazing new chargers from Kirklands to change things up from my normal rattan ones.
I put a simple sprig from my boxwood on each plate, just to add enough of a pop of color.
I added a little greenery and hug some more boxwood sprigs to my cup rack. This isn't an angle I show to much and I don't know why ...I guess it's the fact I have to go knee deep in my kids toys to get this angle :)

For my buffet, this stays the same for the most part besides slight changes.

I just did a tutorial on how to make your very own vintage style cutting board last week. I have a slight obsession with them...both handmade or store bought. You can probably tell if you look around all these pictures :)
I played around with changing up my lavender gallery wall but ultimately came back to them. I think they are timeless and I couldn't find anything better. You can see the tutorial on how to make them here (tutorial). Also, this shiplap/planked wall was one of the first projects I did in my house about 10 years ago, and is still my favorite! It brings so much character into the space. You can see the tutorial for it here.
And there you have it! I'll be sharing all my rooms and my new patio update in the coming weeks, so be sure to come back and check them out :)

Easy Spring Living Room Decor (Tour 2019)

This post contains affiliate links. See bottom of post for full disclosure.

Welcome to the best time of year! ....that is for me at least, when the weather gets warmer and I get to open the windows and let a fresh breeze flow in. Another good part? That its getting darker later. Yep! I don't have to close the blinds at 4:30 anymore :) In honor of such a great time, I'll be sharing with you my living room all decorated for spring! This tour is one of many tours going on this week hosted by Marty from A Stroll Thru Life. If you are joining along the tour hop, welcome from Hymns & Verses!. You can find all the links for this weeks tours at the bottom of the post.

Spring decor to me is adding pops of greens, and this year, pink! I don't get rid of layers for spring...well, first, because I love layering and love all my pillows and blankets. Second, even though it's technically the first day of spring (yay!), we still get snow around here until May, if not June .... so yeah, blankets are still needed for sure!
living room with white couch, large window, stacked wood, and shiplap mantel
I don't tend to do big changes in my decor between seasons, besides Christmas. The changes that happen are through pillows, and the blankets usually play musical chairs throughout the house. I also update my mantel.

This little corner here gets the most action in the house. Seriously. It's where movies are watched, hair is done, conversations are had, and the craziest gymnastics and tumbling tricks are made. It's amazing this chair is still standing :)

I added this cute little dough bowl with some beaded garland to update this side table. That timer is actually perfect to time timeouts (mom tip!). :)

I throw my favorite random decor pieces up on these shelves. These shelves were the best decision I made for this space a couple of years back along with this media cabinet. You can see the tutorial for that here.

I am still a little obsessed with the wood in these built-ins. I have no plans in the near future to move them out. I feel like if I move these off, the shelves are going to look too busy quickly. I like the simplicity and impact of the wood.

As for my mantel, I decided to go full on eucalyptus with it. This wreath was a project from last year (tutorial here). I also kept the birch branch from Christmas and hung some eucalyptus garland from it. I finished off the look with my go-to accessories: candles and books!

I realized the other day how often I find myself sitting on the floor. Then I also realized how much it hurts my butt and back....so, I found this awesome little floor pillow and my butt/back have been saved! Plus, it functions as a dog bed too...apparently :)
This tray was also updated with some faux greens and eucalyptus stems in a vase.

Here's my living room looking towards our dining room. I love those faux beams! I think I need to chunk them this year.

As you can see, my layering has not changed for spring! Still lots of pillows and blankets, but the use of lighter colors and the pink helps the transition to spring decor.

Earlier this year, I moved my faux apothecary cabinet to this corner to house the kids toys. That gave me another little tabletop to decorate! It's been fun playing around with this area....it totally changes weekly!

And yes, even though it's spring...I still want summer! 90 degree temps is what my body needs :) For the space, I used this cute wood letter board for the saying and then added spring elements with the faux garland and painted terracotta pots.

I always like to see the entirety of a space, so here are some wider angle views of this room :)
