DIY Vintage Corbel and Wood Distressing Technique

If you look around my house, you know my obsession with corbels. They were one of the first things I started collecting home decor related. Corbels are the perfect addition to most any place in the house. I use them on my mantels and on table displays. They are also super versatile, where you can use them to hold up shelves, or underneath cabinets or counter tops. They are tough to find though ...especially at a decent price. The larger you want requires a bigger price tag too. I made my first corbel last month, and seriously love it. I didn't realize how easy they are to make! So, I decided to try my hand at another one. This one though was being made as a gift for Mother's Day.

I went a little bigger with this corbel than my previous one, but simpler also. It's about 13" high and 10" wide. My plan in the future is to just keep going bigger and bigger with these, until I can make one that looks like it came off an old building. Getting the design that large has just been a bit harder than I thought.

Here's the design I used for this. Sorry, pretty bad, right? But it works. Just when you cut it out, make the curves even and the straight lines straight:) ha!

As you can see from this design and the below picture, I ended up adding just a little big extra to the ends. The design above can be printed out on two pages and then taped together to get the template needed to cut this out. I wanted to use the whole width of the 1x12, so I hand drew a little more. I ended up using my new scroll saw to cut these this time around. Truthfully, it would have been so much easier with my jigsaw. Seriously. I know my way around a jigsaw! The scroll saw will take some getting used to :) I cut three pieces out used a 1x12 pine board.

I then glued the pieces together, and added a weight on them overnight to make sure they were secured. One of the pieces was a little bowed at first, so this weight helped tremendously in the end.

I then sanded all the edges. I used my palm sander at first, and then switched to just a piece of sandpaper with my hand to get in the curves.

Next, I cut a piece of 1x4 at 13 inches.

I used wood glue to secure the 1x4 to the rest of the corbel. I kept the bottom side flush, and had about an inch on the top. I made sure that the decorative piece was right in the middle of the 1x4. If you don't like waiting for the glue to try, this is a good time to use a nail gun and 1" nails into the piece from the back

Finishing the piece is my favorite part of any diy project. It gives it a whole new look. I actually had no clue what I was going to do with this piece...I just kind of went with whatever felt right at the time. First, I stained it Dark Walnut from Minwax.

I then added my tried-and-true method of distressing...petroleum jelly. Using a little amount of my fingers, I went over the edges and flat sections with it. Wherever I placed it, I knew the paint would come off of it in the next step. So, I used it sparingly, but enough to get a good used/vintage/distressed look.

I then used some white paint. The color was Swiss Coffee by Behr in their satin enamel. You know, the kind you use on walls :) I brushed on one coat...

and then quickly used a paper towel to try to rub it off. Seriously...I was just rolling with the punches on this idea, and it ended up working pretty good! I rubbed the towel harder on the spaces that had the petroleum jelly to get a deeper color. I did this outside, so the paint dried pretty quickly, so I had to do it fast!

Here's the complete look of the finish...and the corbel. It's kind of crazy how it pulls more grey when all I used was dark brown stain and white paint.

Making these corbels is just the best. This one would have cost me at least $40 to buy somewhere, and it literally cost me maybe $5 worth of wood...maybe.

I moved it around my house to find a good spot for pictures...and to get more ideas for spaces I want a corbel :) It ultimately has ended up at my mom's on her amazing bookshelf.

Here's the finish from this angle. Where it's a little darker, is where the petroleum jelly was placed...just to give an idea of how it ends up looking. It's a totally weird thing to do, but works amazingly.

My next corbel? Totally going to make one at least 2 feet tall...if not more. Just have to figure out how to design it!

DIY Farmhouse Curtain Rod and Hardware

After redoing my front living room and adding board and batten to my once beige walls, I thought I would love everything about it. I mean, I got my completely white room that I've always have wanted. But in reality, the wall with my french doors and gallery wall was just way to white...never thought I would say that! ha!

Here's a good picture from my painting process that shows how white it was before I started adding wood accents:

To break up the white, I add this wood accent piece above my door from DecorSteals. It helped a ton.

Then one day, my curtain rods started to sag...no thanks to my pup that likes to lay right against my curtains and pulls them down with his weight. Both sides were pretty bad, so I took it as a cue to get new hardware. I then decided if I was going to do that, I might as well add some wood and more contrast to this already dang white wall.

I remembered seeing something I loved a few years ago from Maison de Pax, and wanted to replicate the look with my own twist.

Here's what I used to get this complete look:
Wood corbels from Home Depot
1" x 96" wood round wood dowel from Home Depot
Wood finial package from Amazon
Curtains rings from Amazon
Curtains from Ikea

Tools:
Circular lid
Jigsaw
Stain
Superglue

I wasn't sure about these corbels at first, I thought I might want to make my own. But they are cheap! Under $2 each, plus they have a notch in the back to hang on screws. So, I decided to give them a try.

I used a lid from one of my vitamin bottles and traced it in the middle of each corbel. It took about 3 traces until I found how deep I wanted it to go. I realized that going past the mid-line of the lid gave me the needed depth. When I picked this lid, I made sure that the diameter was larger than 1" since that was the size of my dowel.

I then cut out the half-ish circle with my jigsaw.

I sanded down the area that was cut to give it a smooth look and feel.

I then used MinWax in Dark Walnut to stain the corbels and the dowel.

I used the same screw that was hanging up my old hardware to hang up the corbel. It slide perfectly in place! It was great because I absolutely hate measuring when having to put curtain rods up...haha.

I then added the clip on curtains rings to my existing curtains. I used ten on each side at each natural fold. I did try to hang these curtains on the dowel without the rings, and it worked. It was just a little harder to shut the curtains at night. Adding these rings gave it a little updated look and better functionality.

After I hung them up, I lived with them for about a week and decided I hated the ends of the dowels.

So, I bought these finials from Amazon. They come with 4 in each, but only 1 of each size. I ended up having to buy two to get enough for the job. But! That gave me an opportunity to pick from 4 different looks.

So, I got some of this fun-tak and tried them all out :)

I ended up going with the chunkier look of look #4. I permanently attached it this time with some super glue.

This new curtain hardware and rod totally brought more character to this all white wall. It's making me love this little corner all over again.

Here's the before of this space...before all the board and batten went up. This corner would always get so dark, but I did love how the frames jumped off the wall.

I'm so pleased with how this turned out. I have more rods on order and almost ready to pick up to do the windows in my living room and dining room.

I have one other big change in here that happened on Mother's Day! I'm not sure it is going to stay, but I'll share that with you soon. It's a new chandelier :) I had plans to update the current light with beads, and put my chandelier in my dining room. But, my husband got his wires crossed and hung it in here instead. I can't say I don't hate it. But, if I leave it...I have to find another one for my dining room :) So....stay tuned for that! I would love your opinions!

DIY Rustic Wood Corbel

 This post contains affiliate links.

I have a number of things that I have a decorating obsession with. This thing can be found in almost every single room in my house. No, it's not candlesticks, although that is another obsession. It's corbels. I have a serious thing for corbels. They used to be so hard to find, but smaller prefab ones are more common now. But still, those nice big old ones are sooo expensive and hard to find. I usually fill the spaces I need with smaller ones I find from small boutique stores. I have salvaged one before which gave inspiration to the piece I'm going to show you how to make today.

Here's the salvaged piece I have that I love, and subsequently figured out how easy it is to make. I'm going to show you how to make one that's about 11 inches high by 8 inches wide. The size of a sheet of paper.

First step was to draw a rough sketch of what I wanted the shape to be like. You can use this as a guide for free. Just use your printer to print it the desired size you want. Then cut it out, smooth out the curves with your scissors :)

I found some scrap wood that fit the cut out and traced it with a pencil.

I then used my jigsaw and cut it out.

Cut out two of the scrolling pieces, and then one that just as the outline with a straight bottom and left side.

Line up and glue the pieces together. I also secured it with some brad nails.

One of mine was cut a little bit off, but I made it work the best I could. Since this was meant to resemble something old and rustic, I didn't really care if it was perfect.

At this point, I decided to sand the edges. To get in the tight spots, I used just a piece of sandpaper instead of a block or sander.

Next, I added the back with a scrap piece of 1x4 about one inch taller than the scrolling piece. Make it flush on the bottom. You can glue this, or secure it with some brad nails. I used both.

I toyed with the idea of doing the bottom piece, but decided to leave it open like my inspiration piece. That one only had one edge. You can add one or not!

To get the look I have, I stained it first with Dark Walnut.

I then went over the edges with some petroleum jelly. I also added some in the middle of the piece. I just put it everywhere I wanted the stain to show through in the next steps.

I then painted the whole thing white. I just used a basic latex paint. I did two coats.

Once the paint was dried, I used a sanding block to go over the edges. The paint should come off pretty easily; if it doesn't and you know there's some jelly on there, sand a little harder.

This is how it ended up looking. I love the peeling and chippy paint look!

This piece took about 2 hours to do, probably could do it faster if I tried, but I took my time. I think it turned out great for a first try! I'm totally going to be buying a scroll saw this week, so I'm excited to try some more designs and sizes. But this is something you can easily make with a basic jigsaw.

I am loving going through my scrap pile and finding fun things to make out of it. The cheapest I found with a corbel this size was about $20, and that's just prefabricated and not real wood. This was completely free and pretty substantial. Can't beat that!

Don't have a jigsaw? This is one of my favorite tools in my tool box! It's actually the first "power tool" I ever owned. You can buy one from the comfort of your home (you know, because that matters now!) for under $30!
